Straits Cafe- Hotel Rendezvous

The Rendezvous Hotel has been refurbished and my memory of this hotel was the well known Nasi Padang restaurant on the ground floor.

Now, the hotel coffee shop is known for it's Singapore Laksa.  I think most of my friends love Laksa.  I have yet to meet one who doesn't.  I decided to try it out for myself one lunchtime.

Apparently, their laksa is freshly cooked when you place your order.  It comes with a reasonable portion of seafood and sliced chicken and it smells great :).  Surprisingly, the gravy is not as rich or thick as it looks.  Which is fine for me as I do not like the coconut milk taste to be too overpowering.  I think it strikes the right balance of spice and just enough of the coconut milk flavour.

If you would like to go for their lunch and high tea weekend buffet, you have to book early as it is fully booked on most days.  Try it if you are around the area or when you have people in town who would like to try this famous dish.

CUT by Wolfgang Puck (Singapore)

Celebrating a very good friends' milestone birthday, we headed to CUT at Marina Bay Sands.  This Austrian celebrity chef opened the restaurant Spago on the Sunset Strip in the US in 1982. Fifteen years later, in 1997, Puck opened the award-winning Spago in Beverly Hills, which has been recognized as one of the Top 40 Restaurants in the U.S. since 2004.

We got there for our 7.30pm dinner and was seated promptly as we had a reservation.  The ambience of the place was great. It is a fine dining restaurant but not one of those too quiet where you can hear a pin drop.  Everyone around seems to be having a great time without being too noisy or intrusive.

We were given the menu and they showed us the various cuts on the trolley that's available for the day.  We decided to order a few starters to share as we were quite afraid that we would be too full to finish our mains.

The cheese breadstick, which I think is parmesan was fabulous.

There were about five choices of bread.  I had the onion bread that was very good.  There's just the right hint of onion without tasting too "oniony" :)

The crabmeat salad was really good too.  It was light, tasty and refreshing and I think the presentation's great too.

We ordered a few starters that we think is different from any other restaurants that we had been to.   Why order the same stuff as what you can get at other places right? This is the veal tongue.  I know it does not sound appetising but we thought, heck why not.  It was tender and it was not slimy or sticky.  It tastes almost like meat but lighter.  The dressing that went with it was also very good.  Even my teenage daughter likes it.

The carpaccio- style raw scallops were excellent!  Light and the wonderfully tasty dressing with a touch of fish roe really enhances the flavour of the scallops.  I enjoyed this very much.

This is my Japanese wagyu sirloin.  It was delicious! We ordered sweetcorn, wild mushrooms and broccoli as our sides.  The meat was done just right although I find the seasoning just a tad salty but then again, that's relative as I do not take a lot of salt.  However, another friend said that it's just right for her.  The sweetcorn was good and if I am not wrong, there's a slight lime flavour to it.  The wild mushrooms was fabulous too.  The brocolli was ok and I feel it was just slightly overdone for brocolli.  Another one of us ordered the USDA filet mignon and it was an excellent choice as well.  She said it melts in her mouth and it was tender, succulent and fabulous.  We ordered three different sauce to go with our steaks as well.  I had a cream horseradish sauce, it was fab.

Since I am not really a dessert person, I ordered a scoop of sorbet for dessert.  I LOVE sorbets :P.  It is good but then again, a restaurant of this standard should not go wrong with sorbets.

The service staff who was serving our table was excellent.  He had been working in other fine steak restaurants before and so he knows what he is talking about.  He also has a great personality and a good sense of humour which is refreshing.  With bad service, even the fabulous food could not make up for the bad experience.  We had a lovely time with great food, fabulous company, wonderful service and the superb ambience  All in all, it was a fantastic birthday celebration with my JJCM kaki.  I would definitely visit them again.

BERGS- Gourmet Burger

I love burgers.  Hence, my JJCM3 (jalan-jalan cari makan, minum, massage) kaki thought I should try this gourmet burger joint.  We went to the Changi Business Park outlet and got there around 12pm.  There was a rather long queue.  He wanted the fish burger and I thought I will try the lamb burger that they had listed on the board.  I grabbed a seat while he ordered.

Chips ($5.50)

They delivered the burgers to us in brown bags and the chips came in paper (see chips photo).  I think you can also count how many pieces there were.  No tray, no plate, no cutlery, no napkin.  The server who delivered the burgers just plonked it on our table with no smile either.

Lamb burger ($13.50)
Lamb burger
As my lamb burger description didn't mention tandoori marinated, I was surprised that it was.  I feel they should be more specific in their description on their board menu that was handwritten.   However, on the menu on their website (while writing this), I noticed they did mentioned that it was garam masala marinated.  Tastewise it was decent.  However, I was expecting something a little bit more with a wow factor since it's supposed to be a gourmet burger and I do think the patty was slightly on the thin side.

Fish Burger ($14.50)
My friend's fish burger tasted fine.  As you can see, the burger is with the standard lettuce, tomatoes, mayo-ish spread.  Personally, I think it looks ordinary.  I guess it's gourmet as they use proper lamb and fish ( I hope).  However, in terms of looks, I think you would agree with me that it does not look like gourmet burger and for what it is, I think it is pretty pricey but they are packed with the office lunch crowd.

Satay Warisan Wak Dargo

Delish Chicken Satay

I was in that area one afternoon and felt like having a snack.  A friend had told me that the satays here are worth a try.  When we got there, the man himself and his wife was busy preparing the satays themselves (for those who are not aware, most shops get their satays from the factory).  So it was really interesting to see that there are still shops making their own satays!

Only the chicken satay was ready when I got there at around 4pm, so we ordered 10 sticks.  The old man himself was barbecuing the satays to perfection.  I was observing as his hands moved swiftly grilling the satays, obviously an expert.  There's an art to it and to me, it is a wonderful sight :)

Expert hands

When I sank my teeth into one, it was really fabulous!  It was succulent, moist, tender and just the right taste of spices.  It wasn't too sweet nor too salty.  The chicken chunks were substantial and absolutely delish!  The sauce that came with it was nice too but I could taste a hint of dried prawns.  My friend likes it but I would have prefer without it.  The satays were good enough on its' own that we ordered another 10 sticks and we just had a huge lunch prior to this!

I think you can place an order if you can see the number
The ice lemon tea that I ordered was fresh and homemade.  It was really refreshing. I would suggest you try that too.
Must try ice lemon tea
It's quite difficult to park around that area.  There are coupon parking lots along the street but they can be full.  Alternatively, you can park at Kembangan Plaza and take a short walk.  FYI, it is on a one way street and you will pass the coffee shop with Mon An Vietnamese noodles from my one of my July postings first.  This one is located right at the the T junction after the first coffee shop.

Event: Of Rendang Tales & Spices in conjunction with Singapore Food Festival 2011

Guest of Honour, Ms Denise Phua
I attended this two day event organised by The Malay Heritage Foundation in partnership with Malay Heritage Centre and supoorted by the Singapore Tourism Board, National Archives, National Integration Council, National Library Board and Mendaki.  The opening ceremony was on 23rd of July at the Malay Heritage Centre in Kampong Gelam.  The Malay Heritage Centre used to be the Istana Kampong Gelam or the Sultan's Palace in Singapore.

Malay dance
This event is a celebration of the unique culinary heritage of the Malay community that originates from a diverse historical heritage. The opening ceremony was graced by Guest of Honour Ms Denise Phua, Member of Parliament for Moulmein-Kallang.  Another talented lady who graced the event was Puan Aziza Ali, who opened the first fine dining Malay restaurant in Singapore years ago.  My late mum and I (when I was a litte girl) used to frequent her restaurant which was located at one of the charming Peranakan shophouses at Emarald Hill Singapore.  She then had to relocate to Albert Court Hotel due to re-zoning at Emerald Hill.  Again, my mum frequented her restaurant as Aziza Ali is an excellent chef.
Pulut Kuning

Guests were also given Pulut Kuning.  This delicacy is made from glutinous rice, soaked in water with a little turmeric, seasoned with salt and some coconut milk.  Usually it is served with rendang during special occasions like weddings, graduation ceremony for the recitation of Quran, engagement ceremony and also when a baby turns a month old.
Aziza Ali, Chef Andri and Chef Amri
The Gala Charity Dinner and Closing Ceremony on the 24th July was held at the Gedung Kuning (Yellow Mansion), also part of the Sultan's Palace.  The dinner was by Aziza Ali, Chef Amri Azim and Chef Andri Jamil.  Chef Amri Azim rose up the ranks to become the Head Chef at Cafe Le Troquet and eventually an Executive Chef at Gourmet Plus European Restaurant.  Chef Andri Jamil has gathered experience ranging from Asian, Spanish to American cuisine.  He had worked at the renowned BICE Italian Ristorante at Goodwood Park Hotel alongside famous chefs Giacomo Gallina and Roberto Galetti of the Garibadi Broup of Restaurants.  Under the guidance of Galetti, he became the Chef-de-Cuisine at the Menotti Italian Cafe & Bar.
Quartet-Munir

Guests at the Gala Dinner was treated to a wonderful array of Malay culture, from the kompang (a shallow framed drum made from goat or cow hide skin) to welcome the Guest of Honour, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts and Minister-In-Charge of Muslim Affairs, to Malay Dance and traditional live music from Quartet-Munir.

The first course of the dinner was an appetiser of Udang Istimewa (Special Prawns).  It was marinated prawns with special lemak sauce served in a martini glass.  The prawn was fresh, tasty and has a crunch to it and the sauce was divine.  It was done right with just the perfect hint of coconut milk without it tasting too rich.  It was excellent!
Udang Istimewa
The second appetiser was Sop Tasik Intisari (Seafood Soup).  It came with mussel and a piece of salmon.  There's a right taste of sweetness to it from the seafood and the soup was extremely tasty.  The fried shallots and the spring onions also add that extra crunchy texture to this delightful soup.  I polished off everything.
Sop Tasik Intisari

The third appetiser was the Rojak Suun Pergedil Istimewa.  It is a vermicelli dried shrimp salad with beansprouts, cucumber, and special chilli sauce, with lightly spiced salmon potato cutlet.  The chilli sauce was very hot, well obviously as it's chilli, but really nice.  The krupuk udang and the krupuk belinjau that came with it was fantastic when dipped with the chilli sauce.
Rojak Suun Pergedil Istimewa

The spiced salmon potato cutlet deserves a special mention as it was truly delicious.  They were bits of corn in it as well and there's a slight crunch to it, which I think could be almonds, but I could be wrong....  Whatever it was, it was really really really good!
Spiced salmon potato cutlet
The five dishes for the main course came next.  The Ayam Kasturi Panggang Berupeh, which is a charcoal grilled chicken served on Upeh leaf for that unique Malay touch was excellent.  The chicken was extremely tender and juicy.  It must have been grilled on slow fire for a long time.  The sauce that came with it was tasty and has the right touch of just enough seasoning.  Not too sweet, not too salty.  I was really impressed by the chicken as it shows the talent of the chefs in achieving such beautiful texture.  It was presented beautifully in the upeh leave.
Ayam Kasturi Panggang Berupeh

The Maktum Anggrek is a lamb shank dish cooked with cashew nuts, tomato sauce and mint leaves.  The lamb was perfectly cooked, succulent, falling off the bone and juicy.  The sauce had just the right consistency and was superbly tasty.  There was only a subtle taste of the spices to enhance the flavour of the lamb.  It was indeed beautifully cooked.
Maktum Anggrek

The other main course dish was the Lautan Mawar or Red Snapper in thick chilli gravy and toasted almonds.  The fish was fresh, soft and had retained it's natural juices.  The thick chilli gravy was not too spicy but just enough to kick some punch to the fish.  It was extremely flavourful.

Lautan Mawar
The Hijauan Murni is a medley of saute asparagus, mushrooms, french beans and eggplant.  When I was reading the menu, it stated that it would be saute to perfection.  I was waiting to see how perfect it would be... and let me tell you that it was INDEED saute to perfection!  It could be such a simple dish but you can tell the skill and the talent that a chef possesses from a simple dish.  The french beans and asparagus were tasty and crunchy, the eggplant was perfect.  Honestly, I think this is one of the best saute vegetables I have ever had as it was executed perfectly as timing and temperature is crucial to achieve such perfection.
Hijauan Murni

The Nasi Haruman, lightly spiced fragrant basmati rice was fabulous.  The grain was nicely separated and the spices were perfect.  I mentioned in one of my previous blogs that it has to have a slight sheen to it.  Look at the photo and you will know what I mean.  It is not too oily and and again, the cashews give a nice crunch to the texture and taste of the rice.
Nasi Haruman
For the dessert, it was a buffet spread of a variety of traditional Malay kuih.  I tried and it was beautiful.  Not too sweet and it has the right consistency with the right "bounce" to it.

I didn't try the other dessert as I was too full... :D

All guests were given the Bunga Telur (Flower Egg) as a gift.  This is usually given at weddings and traditional events.

Traditional Bunga Telur
Students from Assumption Pathway School, ITE College West and Northlight School assisted in the event and they did a great job.  Well done to them and I think it was a great learning experience for them.  Definitely, it goes in line with the theme of the evening, which was "Inspiring the Next Generation".

Aziza Ali is now also fast gaining popularity as an artist.  Self taught, her paintings are themed on food, the kitchen, abstract and according to her "volumptous women" :D.  Her paintings have been commissioned by clients from Jakarta, Malaysia, Holland, Dubai, US and Canada.

All in all, I think it was indeed a superb evening with fabulous food, showcasing the best of Malay cuisine, prepared by skillful and talented chefs, raising the standard of the cuisine to a different level.  I wish more people will eventually get to experience this quality and standard of Malay cuisine as it is totally a fabulous gastronomic experience.  I am a fussy eater and I will rate all the dishes 10/10, so you can just imagine how good it was...

Alfiah

I was too busy to cook dinner one day and after picking up my daughter from school, I decided to buy some food. I drove pass a coffee shop and it looked crowded so I decided to give it a try.

There were so many choices here from lontong to prata to seafood. I felt like having the Mee Hoon Goreng (Fried Bee Hoon) and the Sop Tulang (direct translation Bone Soup :) You can only find this red indian style mee hoon in Singapore. My sister tried to find this dish in KL years back, with no success.

When I got my food, I found that the Mee Hoon Goreng was slightly wet, which was a bit strange for this dish. Taste wise it was just ok. Let's just say I had tasted many better ones.

The Sop Tulang looks slightly curry-ish. I suspect that they accidentally put too much star anise and cardamom as it tasted really strong of these two spices. The meat was tender and the marrow was ample, shame the gravy was not really up to mark...

Shaik Sabri's Xpress Briyani

I LOVE Briyani! It is one of my most favourite dishes. One afternoon, I decided that I must have my briyani fix so I went to a place that my friend had "bungkus" (take-away) for me before. I came back again as I remembered it to be pretty good. I wasn't even sure whether they were open so I was very pleased to see a Chinese guy manning the little shop with a helper.

Actually, I am a lamb person but they had no lamb on that day so I decided to get the beef briyani instead. The rice was perfectly cooked (it separates nicely) and it was excellent. It reminds me more of a wedding style Nasi Minyak (Ghee Rice) than Briyani and it was delish. The beef gravy was good but it could do with the beef being stewed a little longer as I find it a little chewy but it was acceptable. The Acar Timun (pickled cucumber) was fresh, crunchy and slightly sweet. The Chicken Masala was also very decent, not sour and just the right amount of spices.

Next time you are craving for briyani, keep this place in mind. This takeaway joint is located next to KFC in Bedok Interchange. There are no seating area. I heard that they cater for weddings and events as well.

Rumah Makan Minang

I was delighted when one of my "makan kakis" suggested that we go for Nasi Padang for lunch one Sunday. He told me there's this family run well-known place and I should try it.

We got there about 12.30pm and I was shocked to see such a looong queue. There were many Chinese, Malays, Peranakans and tourists. My friend joined the line and after I told him what I wanted, I "chopped" a table. I was also told that there's an air-conditioning area upstairs but it would be a pain if we were going to ask for seconds :P

After what seemed like a long wait, the food arrived. I tried the Asam Pedas Tenggiri. It was good, not too spicy and I love the daun kesum (thai basil). However, I suspected that there's a bit of tomato in this dish and that is more Malay than Padang. The Beef Rendang was tender and sauce was delicious, although slightly spicy for me. The Chilli Chicken dish was hot but tolerable, the chicken was fried and the pounded green and red chilli paste was spread all over the chicken. Drool material. The Sambal Paru (beef lungs) was standard and we had two plates of it because we generally like paru. Sambal Goreng (long beans and fried tofu) was average.

All in all, we enjoyed our meal as we polished off two plates of rice each :D. I think it's very good Nasi Padang for Singapore. Of course, you can't compare to the ones in Jakarta as those are unbeatable. I will definitely come again.

After the meal, we walked around feeling like tourists as my friend was snapping away with his new camera, capturing the sights of the charming Arab Street.
